Transport Canada owns Vancouver International Airport and is administered by Vancouver International Airport Authority, which also administers other airports around the globe through its subsidiary, Vancouver Airport Services.

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh did not want to include Vancouver in his tour across North America due to its lack of suitable airport. After two years, the city bought a land on Sea Island for air travel purposes that has substituted the initial runway at Minoru Park. During the Second World War, the airports and its first terminal, currently South Terminal, was chartered by the Federal government and was managed by the National Defence and Transport department. The airport was the headquarters for RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) training and the crews and their families were accommodated in a new town near the island called Burkevill, after President Stanley Burke of Boeing. Financial supports from the charter were spent to buy extra land for new air docks and a production institute for Boeing Aircraft of Canada.

The current primary terminal was finished in 1968. It has been developed in order to include domestic and international airports. In 1996, the north runway was finished.

Vancouver International Airport has more transpacific flights compared to other Canadian airports. The respectable number of Asian Canadians residing in Vancouver also adds to the huge number of flights.

On the Winter Olympics in 2010, Vancouver is likely to serve more than 20 million passengers every year which will rate Vancouver International Airport among the Top 50 airports globally in terms of passenger traffic.

The airport has four stations: the domestic terminal, which was built in 1968 which lately had a top-to-bottom overhaul; the International Terminal and Transborder, which was built in the 1990's; and the South Terminal, which is a part of the first terminal that is still operational.

As of now, the domestic and international airports are operated by buses N10 and 424 of TransLink. Route N10 connects it to downtown Vancouver, and Route 424 connects it to the Airport Station.
