Dusseldorf International Airport is the third biggest airport in Germany. It is found in Dusseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
In 2008, Dusseldorf International Airport has accommodated 18.15 million passengers. The Dusseldorf International Airport acts as the most important airport for Air Berlin and LTU, its subsidiary. It is the secondary airport of Lufthansa that provides approximately 300 flights daily to 53 places. Beginning May 2008, Lufthansa has re-established long run operations from Dusseldorf International Airport. The 70 airlines of Dusseldorf International Airport hold flights to 186 destinations. Dusseldorf International Airport has approximately 750 takeoffs and landings everyday.
Dusseldorf International Airport is found approximately 9 kilometres (5.6 miles) from downtown Dusseldorf, Germany. It is the main airport from the Rhine-Ruhr area which is the largest urban region in Germany and one of the largest metropolitan areas all over the world.
Dusseldorf International Airport has a couple of runways which are 3,000 metres and 2,700 metres long. There are ideas of extending the 3,000 metres runway to 3,600 metres., However, the Ratingen City, which rests in the runway's approach path, is hindering them.
There are 107 airplane parking spots in the airport. The present terminal building can handle up to 22 million travellers per year. However, because of an agreement with the people living in Ratingen, this amount of passengers may not even be attained in the years to come. Aircraft movements are still limited but the airport has acquired Airbus A380, the new king-sized aircraft. On 12 November 2006, the original Airbus A380 arrived in Dusseldorf as part of a promotion flight by Lufthansa. Lufthansa is preparing to use Dusseldorf International Airport as an alternative route airport for Airbus A380 just in case a bad weather occurred in Frankfurt.
The owners of the Dusseldorf International Airport are Dusseldorf, which owns half of the airport, and the Airport Partners GmbH, which also owns half of the airport. It is divided among its partners where 40% belongs to Hochtief AirPort GmbH, 40% to Dublin Airport Authority (by Aer Rianta International, its wholly-owned subsidiary), and 20% to Hochtief AirPort Capital KGaA.
The passengers in Dusseldorf International Airport have been increasing yearly. In 2002, Dusseldorf International Airport accommodated 14.75 million passengers; in 2003, it accommodated 14.30 million passengers; in 2004, it accommodated 15.20 million passengers; in 2005, it accommodated 15.51 million passengers; in 2006, it accommodated 16.60 million passengers; in 2007, it accommodated 17.83 million passengers; and in 2008, it accommodated 18.15 million passengers.
Dusseldorf International Airport started its operation on 19 April 1927, two years after it has been constructed. However, the first aircraft that landed in the northern part of Dusseldorf was in 1909, the Zeppelin LZ-III.
